SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah-area Georgia Power customers were urged Friday to prepare for possible weekend outages as the utility said it was positioning crews and equipment for Hurricane Isaias impacts across its service territory, including coastal Georgia.
Georgia Power said forecasts called for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and the possibility of tornadoes that could knock out power in parts of the system that serves Savannah and nearly every other Georgia county. Company teams spent the past week preparing to respond to storm damage and restore service as conditions allow.
Customers were told to review emergency plans, charge mobile devices, check supply kits and unplug major appliances ahead of possible outages. The utility also advised residents to follow guidance from local officials and the National Weather Service and to avoid outdoor travel once severe weather arrives.
During the storm, Georgia Power recommended taking shelter inside a sturdy building away from windows and doors and avoiding contact with appliances, metal objects and water because of electrical hazards. After the storm, the company warned people never to touch downed or low-hanging wires, including telephone or television lines that may touch power lines, and not to pull tree limbs off lines themselves.
Outages can be reported and tracked through the Outage and Storm Center tools, the Georgia Power mobile app, text Outage Alerts for enrolled customers, or by calling 888-891-0938 around the clock. An interactive outage map is meant to show near real-time restoration estimates across the state.
Georgia Power serves about 2.7 million customers in all but four of Georgia 159 counties, a footprint that includes Chatham County and the Savannah metro. Coastal customers were reminded that restoration timing depends on how hard winds and debris hit local circuits once Isaias effects arrive.
