POOLER, Ga. — Mitsubishi Power Americas plans to spend $490 million expanding its gas turbine plant near Pooler, a project the state says will double the company’s footprint in Georgia and bring more than 220 new jobs to Chatham County.

Gov. Brian Kemp announced the deal Friday. The expansion at Savannah Machinery Works, on Pine Meadow Drive, adds 450,000 square feet of space for building gas turbine parts. The company expects to fill plant-floor production, operations and technician openings, along with positions running heavy equipment.

The Savannah Economic Development Authority called it the largest single investment Mitsubishi Power Americas has made and said it won the project against stiff competition. A groundbreaking date has not been set.

The plant has deep roots on the Pooler megasite. The company first announced it in September 2009, in the middle of the Great Recession, promising $325 million and about 500 jobs on roughly 120 acres of a 1,500-acre industrial tract that had sat empty for years. The site drew the company with its access to Interstates 16 and 95, rail lines, the airport and the Port of Savannah.

Production started in late 2010, and the first gas turbine built in Savannah rolled out in October 2012. The operation was named Georgia’s large Manufacturer of the Year in 2015, and in 2025 it assembled the first of three big turbines bound for Georgia Power’s Plant Yates in Coweta County.

Mitsubishi Power is part of Tokyo-based Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which makes gas, steam and aero-derivative turbines along with other power equipment. Company officials say the new space is meant to keep up with rising demand for power generation.
