SAVANNAH, Ga. — Marvel actor Paul Bettany and 21-year-old horror director Kane Parsons were among the honorees Monday at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival in Savannah.

Bettany accepted the Virtuoso Award during a TV sidebar screening of VisionQuest, the new Marvel series that picks up Vision’s story after WandaVision. The British actor said he had turned down honors like this before and agreed to this one because of the festival’s ties to students and young artists, adding that meeting students had inspired him.

His run as the character goes back to 2008, when he voiced the computer assistant JARVIS in Iron Man. He first played Vision on screen in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. His other films include A Beautiful Mind, Master and Commander and Margin Call. On the red carpet, he told young actors to focus on what they can control and to be the most prepared person in the room.

Parsons received the NextGen Director Award. He was 19 when A24 agreed to make his horror film Backrooms, which went on to become the studio’s top-grossing film. He said being honest about the limits of his experience has helped him work with veteran crews.

Director James Gray took home the Auteur Award and praised the city’s beauty, along with its fried green tomatoes. Leah Nelson also spoke about Tangles, an animated film about a daughter caring for her mother after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis that took a decade to finish.

Now in its 29th year, the festival put on by SCAD mixes screenings and awards with workshops and panels for students. Events continue on Broughton Street through Saturday.
