SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah State University has a new leader for campus technology. The university named Arthur Williamson its chief information officer, putting him in charge of information technology strategy and day-to-day operations.

In the new job, Williamson is expected to shore up the technology backbone of the campus, improve online and digital services and support what students, faculty and staff need from university systems.

He comes to Savannah from Florence-Darlington Technical College in Florence, S.C., where he worked for more than 10 years and most recently led the IT department as director. While there he also sat on the Critical Infrastructure Advisory Group for the South Carolina Technical College System, which deals with technology infrastructure and security across the state system.

His background also includes work in the financial sector, and his specialties include IT operations, cybersecurity and infrastructure.

Williamson studied computer engineering at Clemson University for his bachelor’s degree and earned a master’s in computer science from Ball State University, where his studies centered on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and systems design.

Samantha Hutchinson, the university’s vice president for business and financial affairs, said technology touches nearly every part of campus life, from classrooms to operations, and that strong leadership in the area is key to the school’s priorities. Williamson said he wants campus systems to support learning for students and good work by faculty and staff, and that he is eager to get to know the campus.
