WOODSTOCK, Ga. — U-Haul Co. of Atlanta North said Saturday it is opening 30 days of no-cost storage and portable containers at 14 company stores for households mopping out after this week’s north Georgia floods.

The offer covers new self-storage units and U-Box containers, depending on what is free at each location. Portable boxes are meant to stay on site at the participating yards; hauling a box to a home costs extra. People who need space can walk into a company-run store in the listed cities or call the regional office to set it up.

Participating yards include mountain-area stores in Dalton, Rome and Jasper plus locations in Woodstock, Canton, the Gwinnett suburbs and other north-metro towns. The company, an official American Red Cross Disaster Responder, said heavy rain from Wednesday night into Thursday poured into towns near the Tennessee line and left homes and shops with water damage.

Farther north, cleanup and basic aid are still the daily work. The McCaysville water system that serves nearly 4,000 customers remains down, so a boil advisory is in effect. Luttrell’s Hardware, at 625 Ocoee Street in Copperhill, passed out bottled drinking water on Saturday, and a marked yellow pool outside city hall supplied water meant only for flushing toilets.

The Salvation Army is serving three meals a day at the city park in McCaysville through Nov. 14, a window that began Saturday. A distribution point for food, clothing and cleaning supplies is operating at 289 Blue Ridge Drive in McCaysville. Residents and shop owners are being asked to set ruined belongings along the curb for pickup.

Families who need debris help can phone Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief, whose number is 678-899-9479. Volunteers must check in at the incident command post behind McCaysville City Hall before they are assigned a job. Monetary gifts can be dropped at the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce at 152 Orvin Lance Drive, Suite A, in Blue Ridge, with a note saying whether the money is meant for public safety or general relief.
