Young people enjoying a pool party at Daffin Park Pool

News Summary

Savannah is kicking off its 100 Days of Summer initiative, partnering with E-93 Radio to provide engaging programs for local youth. Starting with a free Summer Pool Party at Daffin Park Pool, the initiative includes youth employment programs, arts camps, and summer sports leagues. With the support of various city departments, the initiative aims to enhance community safety and reduce crime rates during summer months. Additional teen events are planned, along with educational opportunities to support the local youth population.

Savannah is set to kick off its 100 Days of Summer programming on May 23, 2025, in a collaborative effort with E-93 Radio. The initiative aims to provide local youth with engaging alternatives during the summer months and to reduce crime rates through various activities and programs.

The launch event will be a free Summer Pool Party hosted at Daffin Park Pool starting at 3 p.m. Attendees can look forward to music provided by E-93’s DJ, along with food, drinks, games, and various giveaways, marking a festive way to commemorate the beginning of this summer initiative.

This summer engagement initiative includes multiple city departments: Community Services, Savannah Police Department, and Savannah Fire Department. Each department will contribute specific programming geared towards youth involvement and community safety.

Key Programming Highlights

Among the main offerings from the Community Services department are:

  • A Summer Youth Employment and Violence Intervention Program designed to provide job opportunities and support for at-risk youth.
  • Visual and performing arts camps focused on fostering creativity among young participants.
  • A variety of summer sports leagues allowing for recreational activity and teamwork.

Additionally, the Savannah Fire Department will organize its annual Camp Ignite in July, a free program specifically targeting young girls interested in exploring careers in the fire service. This initiative seeks to encourage young women to consider careers in fields traditionally underrepresented by females.

The Savannah Police Department will conduct a series of events throughout June, including Juneteenth celebrations, Magic Marc summer shows, and a Citizens Police Academy, aiming to connect with the community and promote public safety.

Teen Engagement Events

Besides the kick-off pool party, the city will host “Teen Summer Nights” every Friday and Saturday from May 27 to July 28, providing structured activities for youth aged 12 to 18. Furthermore, three “parking lot parties” featuring games, food, and music are scheduled for May 29, June 26, and July 10 at various recreation centers, expanding recreational opportunities for local youth.

Impact of Previous Initiatives

Mayor Van Johnson has articulated the critical role free summer camps play in the community, not only from an educational standpoint but also as a foundation for maintaining public safety. Last summer, the Savannah Police Department reported an 18% decrease in violent crime during the summer months of June to August compared to the previous year, underscoring the positive effects of community engagement initiatives.

Additional Educational Opportunities

Further enhancing Savannah’s summer programming, the Georgia Film Academy will offer a Film & Television Production course at Savannah State University. This course, open to participants from various universities and the community, is part of a certification program designed to give aspiring filmmakers hands-on experience and valuable industry connections. It aligns with the city’s goal of providing diverse opportunities for growth and development in creative careers.

Community Discussions

On May 15, the Historic Savannah Foundation will host a panel discussion about the restoration challenges of Savannah City Hall, focusing on the iconic gold dome and the modernization of its office spaces. This initiative aims to engage the community in conversations about preserving the historical integrity of the city while addressing contemporary needs.

As Savannah prepares to launch its summer initiatives, it highlights its commitment to enriching the lives of its youth, promoting public safety, and providing platforms for engagement, growth, and community involvement. The 100 Days of Summer program aims not only to entertain but also to inspire the youth of Savannah as they navigate the summer months ahead.
