SAUCIER, Miss. — Georgia’s men’s golf team, ranked 14th, wrapped up the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational in seventh place on Monday, finishing the three rounds at 880, or 16 over par, after a 6-over 294 in the final round.
Grayson Wood was the Bulldogs’ top finisher. He closed with a 2-under 70 and ended the event 1 under overall, good for a tie for sixth among individuals. James Earle shot 1-over 73 on the last day and tied for 15th, while Jackson Byrd and Hamilton Coleman supplied the other counting scores at 75 and 76.
The par-5s were a strength for Georgia, which ranked second in the field in both pars and par-5 scoring for the week, and every Bulldog in the lineup birdied the sixth hole in the final round.
The team title ended in a three-way tie at 868, or 4 over. Top-ranked Arkansas, 12th-ranked Illinois and No. 46 South Carolina shared the trophy, with Tennessee fourth, Alabama ninth and Ohio State 10th in a field loaded with ranked programs. LSU’s Daniel Hayes took medalist honors at 5 under, a shot ahead of Illinois’ Max Herendeen and Arkansas’ Lev Grinberg. Herendeen was the lone player in the 84-man field to break par in every round, going 70, 71 and 71.
The event was played at Fallen Oak, the course tied to the Beau Rivage Resort. Illinois saved its best round for last with a 2-under 286 on Monday, the second-lowest team score of the final day, to pull into the tie at the top. The shared title was the 98th team win for the Illini under head coach Mike Small.
Georgia has one more stop this fall, the Ka’anapali Classic in Hawaii, scheduled for Oct. 26-28.
