Savannah – As the first day of school approaches, the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System is preparing to welcome students back on August 4. With many private schools also set to resume classes in the following weeks, families across the community are urged to gather essential items on students’ supply lists. To assist families in making preparations, a series of community events offering school supplies, food, and entertainment have been organized throughout the area.

One of the notable events is the Back-to-School Bash at Woodlawn Baptist Church, located at 407 Talmadge Ave. in Garden City. Scheduled for July 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., this event will feature a variety of food options, games, and a school supply giveaway for children who are present.

Later the same day, Bull Street Baptist Church at 1400 Bull St. will host its 5th Annual Back 2 School Fest from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This celebration includes musical performances, free food, book bag giveaways, and even haircuts, making it a well-rounded day of fun and support for families.

A mobile initiative named Touring Toward Tomorrow is also set to take place on July 29. This event will distribute school supplies in various areas of Savannah, including downtown, midtown, and southside, particularly targeting tourism and hospitality workers. Families wishing to participate must complete registration by July 26 at www.ChosenForTheArts.org.

On July 27, Chatham Subaru will contribute to the back-to-school efforts by hosting a Back-to-School Drive at Enmarket Arena, running from noon to 4 p.m. This event promises to offer over 1,000 filled book bags, complete with supplies. Attendees can also enjoy free haircuts, face painting, a magic show, and food trucks, with additional prizes available through raffles and cash gift card giveaways for the first 50 guests.

Additionally, First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church will distribute 1,000 free book bags during its Gospel on the Greens Back to School Block Party at Forsyth Park on July 27 at 6 p.m. Attendees can find food trucks and various activities to enjoy, making for a festive atmosphere.

The Savannah Police Department is also joining the effort with its annual Back-to-School Bash on August 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Savannah Impact Program headquarters, where families can find free food, entertainment, and school supplies. This event aligns with their goal of supporting local students and their educational journeys.

For students who need a fresh haircut before classes start, Uncut Barber Academy will provide free back-to-school haircuts on August 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and prior registration is required.

On August 3, Hair by Nicole is hosting a Back to School Expo at Lake Mayer Pavilion from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where attendees can receive school supplies as well. Following that, Curtis V. Cooper Health Care Inc. will hold its own Back-to-School Bash on August 9 from 8 a.m. to noon, offering school supplies, community resources, activities, and health examinations.

Beyond August, a Back-to-School fundraiser planned by Tharros Place for September 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. aims to support education for underage survivors of human trafficking. This event will include a luncheon, speakers, and a silent auction.

Community groups and organizations wishing to contribute additional information about their events are encouraged to submit details to the Savannah-Chatham school district to ensure they are included in a collective resource hub for families. Furthermore, a school supply drive is currently in progress until July 18, with WSAV collecting donations at their studios and during special events.

Before the school season officially kicks off, the Ready Set Go! Back to School event will distribute supplies collected during the drive on July 20 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Cann Park in Savannah, ensuring that students have the necessary materials for a successful academic year. To further support the community, the Combat Boots 2 The Boardroom will host a Back 2 School Bash on July 26 in Richmond Hill, featuring live entertainment and more supplies from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

With the school year fast approaching, these community efforts provide valuable resources to families preparing to send their children back to school, ensuring that every student is ready to succeed.
