Savannah-Chatham County Schools Prepare for New School Year

Savannah, Georgia – The Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools (SCCPSS) is gearing up for the 2025 school year, which begins on August 4. This annual transition marks a significant moment for the district as they prepare to welcome approximately 27,000 students back to classrooms, following an eventful summer.

During their recent Media Day, Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts shared insights about the upcoming school year, emphasizing a renewed commitment to serving all students effectively. In light of the challenges faced during past academic years, administrators are poised to implement several initiatives aimed at enhancing the overall educational experience.

To ensure ready transportation for students, SCCPSS has hired additional bus drivers. These measures aim to support daily operations while providing safe and efficient transit for students across the district.

In response to increasing safety concerns, SCCPSS will enhance its law enforcement presence in schools this year. Police Chief Terry Enoch announced that an increased number of officers will be stationed at school campuses to proactively prevent incidents that could jeopardize student safety. Notably, the SCCPSS police department has introduced three new K-9 units, further strengthening the security measures in place across the district.

Federal funding updates were also a focal point during Media Day. After being previously withheld $11 million in Title funding, the district has successfully regained the majority of those funds. However, SCCPSS is still awaiting an additional $1 million intended for English as a Second Language and professional development programs. Chief Financial Officer Larry Jackson assured stakeholders that the remaining $1.5 million will be covered through local sources if necessary, ensuring that educational programs continue without interruption.

As the district prepares for the school year, Superintendent Watts expressed confidence in the readiness of faculty and staff to support students. Parents are invited to participate in a school bus ride-along scheduled for August 1, providing an opportunity for families to familiarize themselves with transportation routes and safety protocols.
