Savannah Mourns the Loss of Business Leader Cliff McCurry

Cliff McCurry, a notable figure in Savannah’s business community, passed away at the age of 77 on July 31 at his home. Known for his towering presence at 6 feet 7 inches, McCurry spent over 50 years in the commercial insurance and risk management sector, holding executive roles with various companies including Jones Hill & Mercer and Sterling Seacrest Pritchard.

McCurry was lauded by colleagues as a dedicated mentor and community leader, often referred to as Savannah’s “biggest cheerleader.” David Paddison, the president of Sterling Seacrest Pritchard, recognized him as a compassionate individual who was deeply committed to his friends and community.

Personal Struggles and Community Contributions

In the years leading up to his passing, McCurry faced several personal tragedies, including the loss of his son, Edward “Lee” McCurry, in 2020, followed by the death of his childhood sweetheart, Kathy, in 2023. Additionally, his granddaughter was battling cancer. Despite these challenges, his commitment to the community never wavered, and he continued to make a significant impact through various initiatives.

Cindy Robinett, a partner at Sterling Seacrest Pritchard, described McCurry as a “legend in the insurance business” and emphasized his unparalleled kindness. He earned the affectionate nickname “the Big Red Dawg” for both his impressive stature and his allegiance to the University of Georgia.

Career Path and Influence

McCurry began his professional journey in insurance at the age of 14, working as a mailroom delivery boy for Mercer Insurance. Under the mentorship of Nick Mamalakis, he learned the intricacies of the industry and life lessons that greatly shaped his career. A scholarship opportunity allowed him to transfer to the University of Georgia after starting his education at Armstrong College, where he eventually graduated with a focus on insurance.

Throughout his life, McCurry regarded Mamalakis as a father figure, maintaining a close relationship that lasted until the end. In honor of his late mentor, he established the Nick Mamalakis Emerging Leaders program at Georgia Southern University/Armstrong, aiming to inspire future generations in the industry.

A Lasting Legacy

McCurry’s contributions to the Savannah community extended beyond his career in insurance. He was an active board member for numerous non-profit organizations, including the St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System Foundation, World Trade Center Savannah, Communities in Schools of Savannah, and the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce. His dedication to service was recognized with several awards, including the UGA Terry College of Business Distinguished Alumni award in 2025 and his induction into the Savannah Business Hall of Fame in 2019.

Fox & Weeks Funeral Home is managing the funeral arrangements, with a memorial service planned for August 5 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. McCurry’s family issued a statement reflecting on his legacy of kindness and his unwavering commitment to bettering the community.
