Born in 1924, he holds a significant place in history as the first African American law enforcement officer in Georgia and one of “The Original Nine” at the Savannah Police Department. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and has received numerous accolades over his lifetime, including commendations from prominent figures like J. Edgar Hoover and Jimmy Carter. In 2012, he and the surviving Montford Point Marines were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.
