Honoring a Local Legend

Lieutenant John A. White, the guest of honor, has deep ties to Savannah. Born in 1924, he holds a significant place in history as the first African American law enforcement officer in Georgia and one of “The Original Nine” at the Savannah Police Department. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during World War II and has received numerous accolades over his lifetime, including commendations from prominent figures like J. Throughout his life, White has lived in Savannah, raising five children with his wife, Sallie Catherine Williams White, further solidifying his connection to the community.

Additional Community Activities

In addition to the celebrations at Leopold’s, the Savannah community will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of events happening around the same time, including the opening of the musical “Annie” and the final days of the 2025 Savannah Voice Festival, enhancing the festive atmosphere throughout the city.

Legacy of Leopold’s Ice Cream

Founded in 1919, Leopold’s Ice Cream has built a remarkable reputation and continues to serve its classic ice cream recipes to loyal customers. Recently, the establishment opened a new parlor on Whitemarsh Island, expanding its reach while maintaining the quality and authenticity that patrons have come to love. As the community gathers for this momentous occasion, Leopold’s Ice Cream also reaffirms its commitment to serving Savannah with joy and tradition.
