Thunderbolt, GA – Healthy Savannah is set to host a community walk focused on improving walkability in Thunderbolt on September 16, 2025. The walk will kick off at 7:30 a.m. from the parking lot of Tubby’s Tank House, located at 2909 River Dr., Thunderbolt.

This event is part of Healthy Savannah’s broader initiative to engage with community members to gather input on enhancing walking routes and safety. Local leaders from the City of Thunderbolt and the Friends of Tide to Town’s Community Outreach Team will join the walk, which is designed to last for 90 minutes. The objective is to identify any barriers that hinder walking in the area.

Armand Turner, the executive director of Healthy Savannah, noted the strong interest expressed by residents for improved safety and connectivity in pedestrian routes. Thunderbolt has been identified as a key area for walkability enhancements, as recognized by the Friends of Tide to Town Board, which has flagged seven priority locations across Savannah and Chatham County.

Other areas marked for targeted improvements include Garden City, Port Wentworth, and various neighborhoods inside the city limits of Savannah. The Tide to Town Community Outreach Team comprises several partners, including Healthy Savannah, the REACH Grant, Symbioscity, and Kimley-Horn, working collaboratively to promote economic, social, and recreational justice in the community.

This initiative is supported by the City of Savannah and is strengthened by The Collaborative Inc., a Boston-based firm, which is formulating an Equitable Growth Plan for Tide to Town. The project aims to ensure equitable access to transportation and recreational spaces, particularly benefiting residents of lower-income communities, aided by a substantial 5-year, $5.1 million REACH grant.

The upcoming walk on September 16 serves as the first in a series of community walks intended to improve walkability across Chatham County. Devin Frails, Healthy Savannah’s Physical Activity manager, indicated that the seven priority locations will eventually link into the planned network of trails for Tide to Town.

Participants in the walk will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with city officials and community stakeholders, assessing current conditions while helping shape a comprehensive plan for future improvements to walkability in Thunderbolt.

This community-focused initiative is designed not only to enhance walking conditions but also to foster a more interconnected and accessible environment for all residents. By addressing the specific needs and concerns of community members, Healthy Savannah aims to create safer, more inviting spaces for walking and recreation, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being of the Thunderbolt community and its surroundings.

As communities across Chatham County strive for enhanced walkability, this effort underscores the importance of public input in planning and improving infrastructure that supports healthier lifestyles.
