Savannah

BAPS Charities successfully hosted its annual walkathon on Saturday at Forsyth Park, attracting over 350 registered participants to support the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS). This event, which has been a staple of BAPS Charities for over 25 years, showcases their commitment to community development in more than 100 cities across the United States.

The walkathon in Savannah marks 18 years of partnership between BAPS Charities and the LDSS, reinforcing their dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families. As part of this effort, BAPS Charities made a significant donation of $5,000 to the LDSS, aimed at bolstering their ongoing initiatives.

Neil Sharma, Outreach Media and Walk Coordinator for BAPS Charities, highlighted the importance of community support during the event. He acknowledged that the walkathon serves as a vital opportunity to create awareness and generate funds that contribute to the well-being of those impacted by Down syndrome.

One of the participants, Ella Marchese, expressed her appreciation for the meaning behind the walkathon and its positive impact on the lives of those with Down syndrome. The event draws upon a personal connection, as Marchese and Lainey Bogardus were pivotal in the formation of the LDSS nearly two decades ago, inspired by their own experiences and the need for a support system.

Background of the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society

Established in response to a lack of resources and support following the birth of Lainey Bogardus, the LDSS aims to provide information, advocacy, and fellowship for families affected by Down syndrome. Candy Bogardus, president of the LDSS, underscored the evolution of community support over the years, transforming the landscape for families navigating similar challenges.

In her remarks, Bogardus emphasized the shift in perception towards individuals with Down syndrome, illustrating how the community has rallied together to foster understanding and acceptance. She stressed the importance of helping those with Down syndrome discover meaning and purpose as they mature, ensuring they lead fulfilling lives.

The walkathon also serves as a precursor to the annual Buddy Walk, scheduled for October 18 at Forsyth Park. The event aims to further raise awareness and funds for the LDSS, solidifying its role as an advocate for individuals with Down syndrome in the region.

Community Impact and Future Initiatives

The turnout at the walkathon reflects the growing community involvement and interest in supporting individuals with Down syndrome and their families. As more participants and supporters join the cause, the potential for further impacting local lives expands. BAPS Charities continues to play an integral role in this community-focused mission, ensuring that families have resources, support, and a sense of belonging.

For those who wish to contribute to the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society, donations are accepted through their official website at ldssga.org. Such contributions will aid in the enhancement of programs and resources available to families, highlighting the continuing need for community support and advocacy.
