Joyce Catherine Badon, a 21-year-old senior architecture student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), lost her life in the recent flooding that struck central Texas over the Fourth of July weekend. She was originally from Beaumont, Texas, and was remembered as a cherished daughter, friend, and classmate by SCAD.
Badon’s tragic death occurred during a flash flood that happened around 4 a.m. on July 4. At the time, she was staying with three friends at a river home in Hunt, Texas. As the floodwaters rose, their vehicles were washed away, leaving them trapped. One of her friends managed to contact a parent for help, but the call ended abruptly when the phone went dead, with Badon believed to be the last person heard from.
The flooding in central Texas has proven to be catastrophic, resulting in over 100 fatalities and leaving more than 160 people unaccounted for, according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott. This incident marks the deadliest inland flood in the United States since the Big Thompson Canyon flood in 1976. Search and rescue operations are currently underway as emergency responders continue to search for those missing in the aftermath of the flooding.
Following this tragic event, SCAD has extended its condolences to Badon’s family and friends while offering grief counseling resources for students affected by this loss. Badon was passionate about utilizing her artistic talents to make a difference in the world, highlighted by her recent involvement in a project that aimed to redesign donation centers for Goodwill as part of a spring SCAD SERVE course.
In light of the devastating floods and their aftermath, SCAD has shared a relief effort known as Together for Texas in partnership with The Salvation Army. This initiative aims to support victims impacted by the flooding, allowing individuals to contribute to recovery efforts.
The events surrounding Badon’s passing and the wider impacts of the flooding serve as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with severe weather. Flash floods can arise with little warning, creating life-threatening situations for those in affected areas. As residents and authorities work to navigate the aftermath of this tragedy, the community’s support and resources will play a critical role in recovery.
