Georgia Ports Authority Launches New GPA Trucker App

News Summary

The Georgia Ports Authority has introduced the GPA Trucker mobile app to enhance the efficiency of truck operations at the Port of Savannah. With features like real-time notifications, facial recognition, and digital ticketing, the app aims to streamline the trucking process, reduce turn times, and improve the overall experience for drivers. As the Port experiences record activity, the GPA Trucker app represents a significant advancement in optimizing operations, while further updates are planned for navigation support and ticket management.

Savannah, Georgia – The Georgia Ports Authority has launched a new mobile application called the GPA Trucker, targeting improvements in the efficiency of truck operations at the Port of Savannah. This innovative tool aims to enhance the experience for truck drivers, who play a vital role in port operations, particularly during the weekends and weekdays when the port manages an average of 14,000 to 16,000 gate moves each day between 4 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The GPA Trucker app is designed to significantly reduce truck turn times at Garden City Terminal, which currently average 35 minutes for single moves and 53 minutes for dual moves that involve delivering an export and picking up an import. By leveraging the app, drivers stand to gain access to a wealth of information that streamlines their operations, minimizes paperwork, and optimizes drive time.

One of the key features of the GPA Trucker app is its ability to provide drivers with real-time notifications about changes in gate hours, allowing them to plan ahead and adjust their schedules if necessary. This is particularly beneficial for truckers aiming to achieve six to eight turns daily and return home for dinner with their families.

Enhanced User Experience

The app incorporates advanced security measures, including facial recognition and fingerprint login, ensuring ease of access for users. Its initial functionality primarily focuses on improving the process related to container transactions. Currently, Georgia Ports uses Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) for tracking container moves, which are valid for 72 hours. Truckers are required to present this PIN at the terminal gate to receive a paper ticket detailing pickup or drop-off locations.

The GPA Trucker app includes a digital version of this ticket, which can be stored or sent electronically to trucking companies, thereby reducing unnecessary trips that would occur if a PIN has expired or if there are changes in the export containers. The app also signals the closest terminal entry gate to the container and provides timely announcements regarding gate hours and weather alerts.

Future Features and Improvements

In addition to its current capabilities, future updates to the GPA Trucker app will include a feature that automatically delivers digital tickets to drivers via push notifications. Upcoming expansions will also integrate navigation assistance, utilizing popular platforms like Waze or Apple Maps, guiding truckers to their container locations more easily.

Record Volumes and Ongoing Developments

The launch of the GPA Trucker app arrives during a period of record activity at the Port of Savannah. April was marked as the busiest month for container trade, handling 515,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), reflecting a remarkable 17 percent increase from the previous year. This growth was supported by notable enhancements in both intermodal volumes and overall container handling efficiency.

In conjunction with these advancements, a new Customs inspection warehouse is slated to begin operations by July 2025, which will further bolster inspection capabilities at Garden City Terminal. Additionally, construction is set to commence on a new Roll-on/Roll-off cargo berth at the Port of Brunswick in mid-2025, with a forecasted completion date of 2027. USA’s Colonels Island Terminal in Brunswick remains the leading terminal for Roll-on/Roll-off cargo dedicated to automobiles and heavy equipment.

To support the increasing operational demands, the Georgia Ports Authority has recently completed significant capacity expansions. The introduction of the GPA Trucker app represents the latest effort to enhance the efficiency of operations and improve the overall experience for truck drivers, who are considered critical stakeholders in the port’s operations.

The GPA Trucker app is available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play by searching for “GPA Trucker.” For additional assistance and details on utilizing the app, users are encouraged to visit gaports.com/motor-carriers.
