Savannah – Renegade Paws Rescue, a local animal rescue organization, has been awarded a significant grant of $100,000 from PetSmart Charities to enhance veterinary care for pet owners in Savannah’s 31415 zip code, which includes communities such as Carver Village and Cloverdale. This funding aims to address the critical barriers residents face in accessing affordable veterinary services.
The grant comes as part of PetSmart Charities’ Incubator grant program, which is designed to support veterinary initiatives in historically excluded communities. Renegade Paws Rescue has been recognized as one of ten groups across the nation selected for this funding, underscoring the organization’s commitment to improving pet care accessibility.
Jennifer Taylor, the director of Renegade Paws Rescue, expressed gratitude for their selection and acknowledged the pressing need for such services in the area. Since its establishment in 2023, Renegade Paws has identified a significant gap in accessible and affordable veterinary care, emphasizing the importance of helping pets remain with their owners and out of the shelter system.
Research conducted by PetSmart Charities reveals that many pet owners across the United States have either skipped or declined necessary veterinary care due to various accessibility challenges. The grant will enable Renegade Paws Rescue to conduct essential community outreach, including focus groups and surveys at resource fairs. This outreach aims to gather comprehensive data on the specific veterinary needs of the residents in the targeted neighborhoods.
Sharon Shatto, Grants and Programs Development Manager for Renegade, noted that distance from veterinary clinics and limited public transportation options often hinder residents from obtaining pet care. Savannah’s public transit system poses additional challenges, as pets are not permitted on buses, further complicating access to necessary veterinary services.
The first phase of the grant will conclude at the end of this year, following which Renegade Paws Rescue plans to seek additional funding to implement practical solutions, including the launch of pop-up vaccination clinics. Such initiatives aim to provide immediate assistance and enhance veterinary care access for pet owners in the community.
In addition to the grant activities, Renegade Paws Rescue currently operates various programs to support animal welfare. The organization offers temporary foster care, monthly heartworm treatment clinics, and medical care for animals in their shelter. Presently, they manage around 600 to 650 pets in foster care, while approximately 30 to 40 reside in their main shelter. Last year alone, the organization facilitated 1,146 adoptions, showcasing its effective outreach and care initiatives.
Looking ahead, Renegade Paws Rescue aims to secure further funding from PetSmart Charities to enable the employment of an in-house veterinarian. This step would significantly enhance the quality of care available to the animals under their supervision and further address the veterinary needs of the community.
