Savannah – The Rotary Club of Savannah is hosting a fundraiser on Thursday, June 5, to support the development of the proposed Herb Traub Gathering Space at Forsyth Park. This initiative aims to create a unique communal area featuring stone tables and benches, designed to enhance the park’s accessibility for both residents and visitors.

The gathering space will be located west of the amphitheater adjacent to the Collins Quarter restaurant. This site is expected to become a focal point for social interaction within Forsyth Park, encouraging people to come together and enjoy the natural beauty and recreational offerings of the area.

This project is named in honor of Herb Traub, a prominent Savannah businessman who passed away in 2008. Traub was known for his deep commitment to community service and hospitality, values that the Rotary Club hopes to carry on through this gathering space. The concept for this tribute was first proposed seven years ago by a former president of the Rotary Club and has been under development ever since.

Current Rotary Club president Capt. Lux Lakshman noted that the idea has evolved over several years, underscoring the club’s commitment to honoring Traub’s vision for a welcoming and engaging community space. The Rotary Club operates the Herb Traub Project Fund in conjunction with the Savannah Community Foundation, aiming to secure funding and bring the project to fruition.

The fundraiser will take place at the Collins Quarter starting at 5:30 p.m., where attendees can learn about the proposed gathering space and the legacy of Herb Traub. The event will feature refreshments, and all proceeds from the restaurant that day will directly benefit the creation of the gathering space.

For those unable to attend the fundraiser but still wishing to contribute, donations can be made tax-deductibly to the Savannah Community Fund with the memo indicating “RCOS Herb Traub”. Contributions via credit card can also be made by contacting the Rotary Club directly.

This gathering space project follows an earlier success for the Rotary Club, which recently opened an all-accessible playground in Forsyth Park at a cost of $342,000. Designed to accommodate children with various needs, the playground includes features like nine slides, 16 climbing structures, and eight swings, reinforcing the club’s commitment to community welfare and inclusivity.

The Rotary Club of Savannah operates under the motto “service above self,” guiding its initiatives and projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life within the community. The club’s efforts to create spaces like the Herb Traub Gathering Space and the new playground emphasize their dedication to fostering community spirit and providing inclusive environments for all citizens.

In summary, the upcoming fundraiser represents a significant step toward realizing the vision of the Herb Traub Gathering Space, an area intended for leisure and community gathering in the heart of Forsyth Park. Local residents are encouraged to participate in this initiative that not only honors a beloved member of the Savannah community but also enhances the city’s park facilities.
