Between 2010 and 2022, the Peach State’s population surged by 12.4%, outpacing the national growth rate of 7.7%. This remarkable increase is certainly something to celebrate, but it has also highlighted an important challenge—the job openings in Georgia, especially around the greater Atlanta metro area, are increasing even faster than the population growth!
In a bid to tackle this issue, officials from the state have rolled out a new strategy aimed at connecting job seekers to the booming opportunities currently available. WorkSource Atlanta is at the helm of this effort, actively recruiting for several high-demand fields that are essential as the state navigates its impressive growth. To support these initiatives, the State Workforce Development Board has just approved a unified High Demand Career List.
This High Demand Career List is a key part of Governor Kemp’s initiative called “Top State for Talent.” The whole idea is to boost workforce development that aligns directly with what employers need. The list shines a light on careers that are not only in demand but also offer high wages and require substantial skills. It serves as a practical guide for students and families making crucial career choices.
One of the main goals of this initiative is to create a strong connection between education and real-world job needs. As part of this strategy, community collaboration among businesses, educational institutions, and economic organizations is being emphasized. Notably, Kia Georgia’s CEO has pointed out that aligning training programs with what employers are actually looking for is essential to close existing skill gaps.
In the academic sphere, the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) is making headway by graduating over 37,000 students last year! An impressive 99% of those graduates are either stepping straight into jobs or continuing their education. This is fantastic, but they are not stopping there! TCSG has partnered with Western Governors University (WGU), which means that students can now pursue their bachelor’s degrees with available scholarships. This allows for a more streamlined educational pathway.
Speaking of flexibility, WGU offers a unique approach to education with its rolling admissions and competency-based programs. This means that students can progress at their own pace! Typically, it takes around 27 months to earn a bachelor’s degree with WGU, making it an appealing option for many, especially given that it comes at a reduced cost, helping students avoid heavy debts.
As Georgia continues to grow, Governor Kemp acknowledges the urgent need for skilled workers, especially in the rapidly growing technology and healthcare sectors. Plans are in place to enhance training programs in these pivotal areas.
