Savannah, Georgia – The Chad Cooper Company presented their impactful production, “Justice on Trial Reloaded,” at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus on May 31, 2025. This thought-provoking play, written by Chad Lawson Cooper, tackles a fictive court case against the U.S. Justice Department brought by civil rights attorneys seeking reparations for African Americans.

The narrative intricately weaves the testimonies of time-traveling witnesses, featuring renowned historical figures such as Harriet Tubman, Emmett Till, and Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois. Alicia Robinson Cooper portrays Harriet Tubman, infusing the role with both humor and strength, and captivating the audience with her powerful singing. Chad Cooper, II plays Emmett Till, delivering an emotionally charged performance during his scenes. Highlighting the familial connection, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois is brought to life by his great-grandson, Jeffrey Du Bois Peck, who adds a deeply personal touch to the character.

The first act sets the stage for a courtroom drama, where civil rights attorneys methodically question the witnesses, while the defense attorneys from the Justice Department, including Attorney Clarence Thomas, Jr. portrayed by Chad Lawson Cooper, conduct cross-examinations. The unique engagement of the audience as a live gallery adds to the courtroom’s dynamic atmosphere, prompting lively reactions to the courtroom exchanges.

Act II shifts focus to the deliberations of a multicultural jury, showcasing a range of emotions from laughter to shock and anger among attendees. The play culminates in a powerful final act, where the presiding judge delivers a verdict that resonates deeply with the storyline’s themes.

Local talent also graced the production, with roles including Tiffany Blake as economist Dr. Maxine Bryant, Alicia Miller Blakley as Mamie Till, and Matthew Odum as the Court Reporter. Their contributions heightened the sense of community involvement and significance within the performance.

During intermission, significant recognition was given to local leaders with the presentation of the W.E.B. Du Bois Humanitarian Award. This award honored individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to social change, including Pastor Charles Roberson, Bishop Jackie Gilbert-Grant, and Bishop Thomas Sills, among others.

“Justice on Trial Reloaded” not only serves as an engaging piece of art but also reflects critical themes of social justice, racial equity, and historical remembrance, linking to the ongoing national discourse surrounding reparations and systemic racism. This production has resonated with audiences in over 100 cities, performing at esteemed venues such as the Palace Theater and Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

The event at Georgia Southern University provided a unique opportunity for community reflection and discussion on America’s complex history and the continuous struggle for justice. The performance connected strongly with attendees, promoting conversations about the past and encouraging collective contemplation about the future.
