Founded in 1900, the family-run business has evolved over generations, maintaining its commitment to quality and community engagement. The new store features luxury brands, a unique design, and emphasizes a strong local workforce. Under the leadership of the current generation, Levy Jewelers continues to be a cherished part of Savannah’s retail landscape, celebrating pivotal life moments for its customers.

Savannah is celebrating a significant milestone as Levy Jewelers marks its 125th anniversary of family ownership with the opening of a new location in downtown. This historic establishment, recognized with the Best Fine Jewelry award in 2025, showcases not only its rich heritage but also its commitment to modern retail experiences.

Levy Jewelers was founded in 1900 by Aaron Malitz Levy, who emigrated from Brest, Belarus, escaping political and religious persecution. Initially based in Ellis Square, the original shop operated as a one-man business offering a variety of goods to the community.

In 1928, Jack Levy, Aaron’s youngest son, took over and shifted the business focus, emphasizing diamonds and fine jewelry. By 1935, the Levy family purchased property at 101 Broughton St., establishing what became their flagship store. The original location was remarkable for its time, being one of the first businesses in Savannah to provide air conditioning and to offer credit to the Black community during a segregated period.

Under the leadership of Aaron Levy, Jack’s son, in the early 1960s, Levy Jewelers transitioned to exclusively selling fine jewelry and watches. In the early 2000s, Lowell Kronowitz, Aaron’s great-grandson, took charge of the family business, ensuring it continued to thrive within the family lineage. He later moved Levy Jewelers to its present site at 2 Broughton St., following substantial renovations.

The new location spans approximately 5,000 square feet and features elegant displays for designer brands such as David Yurman and Pandora, along with a dedicated area for Rolex. As part of the renovation, Kronowitz emphasized the significance of community by employing local contractors, with 95% of subcontractors being from the Savannah area. Major renovations included the addition of a fireplace, a diamond room for private viewings, and a beverage center to enhance customer comfort.

The state-of-the-art facility also allows for versatility, with the second floor being designed for potential events and the third floor allocated for offices. Currently, Levy Jewelers employs 60 individuals, boasting an impressive average tenure of 15 years among the staff, which highlights the strong family-oriented culture within the workplace. Kronowitz takes pride in maintaining jobs for 40 families linked to the business and has reiterated the importance of community support for local enterprises.

The store recently celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by various local dignitaries, including Mayor Edna Jackson. This commemorative event encapsulates both the long-standing legacy and the bright future of Levy Jewelers, which Kronowitz describes as a “happy business” dedicated to helping customers celebrate pivotal life events.

Levy Jewelers stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of family-run businesses, consistently adapting and contributing to the community while maintaining its historical roots in Savannah. As the newest chapter in its storied history unfolds in downtown, Levy Jewelers promises to continue its tradition of excellence in fine jewelry for years to come.
