The event, which took place between approximately 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., has become a hallmark of community involvement and environmental stewardship in Bluffton.

This year’s cleanup involved a diverse group of participants, including students, scout groups, civic organizations, and local businesses, as well as nearly a dozen official partners. The Town of Bluffton’s stormwater technician led the event, indicating its growing significance as a collaborative community effort.

Among the collected waste, 287 pounds were successfully recycled, thanks to a partnership with i2 Recycle. This recycling initiative has been part of a broader effort led by the Town since 2015 to ensure that suitable materials are not discarded but instead repurposed, supporting local environmental sustainability.

This year, the cleanup provided multiple educational booths organized by local entities, including Beaufort County and the Port Royal Sound Foundation, focusing on water quality improvement within local watersheds. Additionally, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services introduced a mini-Tidal Saltwater Workshop for the first time, adding another layer of educational opportunity to the event.

Volunteers had the unique chance to engage in creative environmental advocacy by painting a rain barrel, which will be installed at the Town of Bluffton’s Public Services building. One standout participant this year was M.C. Riley Elementary School, which took part for the 10th time as part of the Annual School Participation Challenge, encouraging students and their families to join the efforts.
