Highway traffic during Memorial Day weekend

News Summary

AAA projects that 45.1 million travelers will hit the roads for Memorial Day weekend, marking an increase from last year. With favorable gas prices and traffic management measures in place, Americans are eager to take trips, despite economic uncertainties. Events such as the ‘Savannah Salutes’ celebration and historical reenactments in the region highlight the holiday’s significance. Travelers are encouraged to prepare their vehicles and take advantage of budget-friendly travel options as they honor fallen soldiers during this Memorial Day.

Savannah, Georgia – AAA is projecting a record-breaking 45.1 million travelers to hit the roads for Memorial Day weekend, an increase of nearly 1.4 million compared to last year. This surge in travel reflects a notable growth of approximately 45,000 people over the previous year, indicating a strong desire for Americans to take trips despite prevailing economic uncertainties.

The anticipated figures surpass the record previously set in 2005, when approximately 44 million people traveled at least 50 miles from home during the holiday weekend. As the unofficial kick-off to summer, Memorial Day weekend traditionally sees a significant increase in travel, along with activities such as beach outings, barbecues, and the opening of new movie releases.

In an effort to ensure smoother traffic flow, both the Georgia and South Carolina transportation departments have suspended road closures during the holiday weekend. In Georgia, the Department of Transportation will have holiday work restrictions in place from Friday, May 23, at noon until Tuesday, May 27, at 5 a.m. Similarly, South Carolina’s restrictions will run from Friday, May 23, at 6 a.m. to Tuesday, May 27, at 6 a.m.

Despite these traffic management measures, moderate congestion is expected, particularly on Interstate 16 near Savannah, affecting both westbound and eastbound traffic. To mitigate travel issues, travelers are encouraged to conduct a vehicle checklist focusing on critical components such as the battery, brakes, and tires.

The average gas price in Georgia is notably lower this year, standing at $2.93 compared to $3.38 at the same time last year, a factor that may influence the increase in travel this Memorial Day weekend. To further ease travel expenses, AAA encourages vacationers to explore budget-friendly options and consider consulting travel advisors for discounts.

Additionally, AAA estimates providing assistance to over 356,000 stranded drivers across the United States during the weekend. This statistic underscores the importance of vehicle readiness and having support on hand for travelers.

Events planned for the weekend in the local area include the Memory Garden at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, which commemorates 26,000 WWII airmen. The popular “Savannah Salutes” Memorial Day Weekend Celebration begins on May 23 and will feature a variety of entertainment and family-oriented activities. The City of Richmond Hill is also set to conduct its annual Memorial Day ceremony on May 26, located at J.F. Gregory Park.

On May 24, historical reenactments will take place at the Fork Pulaski National Monument, including live cannon firings. Special Memorial Day programming will be offered at both the Savannah History Museum and Old Fort Jackson. For those relying on public transportation, the Chatham Area Transit Authority (CAT) will operate on a modified holiday schedule on May 26.

Weather forecasts suggest that travelers can expect low chances of rain with temperatures in the low to mid 80s throughout Memorial Day weekend in Georgia, promoting favorable conditions for outdoor activities.

As people across the nation prepare to travel, this Memorial Day weekend not only marks the start of summer but also serves as a time to honor the fallen soldiers and reflect on the history behind this significant national holiday.
