The Housing Authority of Savannah has announced the opening of the waiting list for its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, aimed at supporting low-income families in need of affordable housing. In addition, a public housing waitlist for residents aged 62 and older, as well as those with disabilities, will also be launched.
Savannah, GA – The Housing Authority of Savannah (HAS) has announced the opening of its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program waiting list, aimed at assisting low-income families seeking affordable housing solutions. This initiative was communicated by Evette Hester, the Executive Director of HAS, who took over the leadership role in December.
The HCV Program is designed to provide essential rental assistance to eligible individuals and families, allowing them to secure safe and adequate housing in the private market. Participants in the program contribute a portion of their income toward rent, while HAS covers the remainder directly to the landlord. This support system is crucial for fostering stability and opportunity for families navigating financial challenges.
The waiting list will open on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. and will remain accessible until Friday, July 11, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. During this period, the first 1,500 applicants who submit their applications will be selected based on the date and time of submission. Notably, applicants must have an income that does not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) to qualify for the program.
Alongside the HCV waiting list, HAS will also open a public housing waitlist tailored for residents aged 62 and over, as well as those with disabilities. Applications for public housing will begin at 10 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m., or once a sufficient number of applications have been collected. Similar to the HCV Program’s application process, submissions for public housing will only be accepted online to ensure a streamlined and efficient system.
Residents who may lack internet access can utilize facilities at the Housing Authority’s main office or local public libraries to complete their applications. Applications will be processed in the order they are received, reinforcing the importance of timely submission for interested individuals and families.
Evette Hester highlighted the significance of affordable housing in nurturing thriving families and robust communities, reflecting HAS’s commitment to providing an accessible, fair, and transparent application process for those in need. This strategic step aims not only to alleviate housing insecurity but also to create opportunities that can empower families in Savannah.
The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, a critical resource in addressing housing needs, continues to be a vital part of the efforts made by HAS. By opening the waiting list, the organization is actively working towards ensuring that families in Savannah have access to affordable housing options that promote stability and well-being.
For those interested in applying for the HCV Program or public housing, all applications must be completed online at portals.savannahpha.com, as HAS strives to maintain a fair system for all applicants during this crucial period. The opening of these waiting lists is seen as a positive step towards providing essential support to those seeking affordable housing solutions in the Savannah area.
