Savannah, Georgia – The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum has announced the opening of a new exhibition titled “Beyond the Plate: Sea and Sky,” featuring the mixed-media artwork of artist Rob Strati. This exhibition, which explores nautical themes through Strati’s unique artistic lens, will run from September 25, 2025, through April 12, 2026.
To celebrate the launch of the exhibition, the museum is hosting a series of special events. A Donor Preview Reception with Rob Strati will take place on September 25 from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Following this, an Opening Reception will continue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. On September 26 from 5 to 7 p.m., the museum will hold “Art, Conversation & Creative Play: An Evening with Rob Strati,” which includes a workshop along with drinks and snacks. Additionally, a free Family Day event is scheduled for October 26 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The “Beyond the Plate” exhibition follows the success of previous shows at the museum, including “Sea of Ink: Savannah Maritime Tattoos” and the award-winning “Waves of Wonder.” Rob Strati is recognized as one of America’s contemporary artists. He has gained notable acclaim with sold-out shows at venues such as the Duane Reed Gallery in St. Louis and the FREMIN Gallery in New York, with his works finding a place in the collections of international buyers.
The exhibition will feature Strati’s latest mixed-media works, along with limited-edition prints and a striking site-specific installation that will be suspended in the museum’s atrium. Strati’s creative process is characterized by an innovative perspective that transforms broken objects into art, weaving themes of regeneration and storytelling throughout his pieces. Curator Tania Sammons notes that Strati approaches his work with a sense of hope, reflecting on the beauty found in brokenness and the potential for creating something new from loss.
Each artwork featured in the exhibition begins with the deliberate breaking of a porcelain plate, an act that holds personal significance for Strati due to his connection to his wife’s late mother. The artist invests approximately two weeks into the completion of each piece, allowing for spontaneity and reflection in his creative process. Strati describes his methodology as a blend of chaos and control, aiming to prompt viewers to reconsider their perspectives on time, creativity, and beauty.
All artwork included in the “Beyond the Plate” exhibition will be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds from sales will support the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum, ensuring that the institution can continue to provide engaging exhibitions and programs for the community.
The Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum invites the public to explore this latest exhibition and participate in the upcoming events that celebrate the intersection of art and maritime heritage. With Rob Strati’s transformative work at the forefront, “Beyond the Plate: Sea and Sky” promises to be a compelling experience for visitors of all ages.
