Savannah Launches Mobile Back-to-School Supply Drive

News Summary

Savannah’s hospitality workers will benefit from a new mobile back-to-school supply drive, ‘Touring Toward Tomorrow,’ launched by the nonprofit Chosen For the Arts. The initiative aims to provide essential school supplies directly to workers unable to attend traditional giveaways due to their schedules. With support from local organizations and a planned route covering various parts of Savannah, the drive will help families prepare for the upcoming school year. Registration is required, and additional community events are scheduled to support students in need.

Savannah is gearing up for a crucial back-to-school season with an initiative designed specifically for the city’s tourism and hospitality workers. Chosen For the Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to uplifting communities through creativity and collaboration, is launching a mobile back-to-school drive called “Touring Toward Tomorrow”. This initiative aims to deliver essential school supplies directly to workers who are unable to attend traditional supply giveaways due to challenging work schedules.

The mobile drive is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 29th, and will cover various locations including downtown, midtown, and southside Savannah. Supplies will be transported and delivered via an Old Town Trolley, which is serving as a key sponsor for this initiative. The mobile nature of the drive ensures that workers can conveniently receive the supplies without sacrificing their job commitments.

The initiative is further supported by a coalition of partners, including the Howmet Women’s Network, the Howmet African Heritage Network, Eichholz Law Firm, and the Tourism Leadership Council. By pooling resources and efforts, these organizations aim to ensure that individuals within the hospitality sector have the necessary supplies as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

Registration is required for participation in the mobile drive, and interested individuals are encouraged to sign up by Friday, July 26th. To register or learn more, individuals can visit the official website of Chosen For the Arts or follow them on social media platforms.

The importance of this initiative is underscored by the quickly approaching first day of school for the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, which is set for August 4, 2025. This timing aligns with various other community back-to-school events aimed at supporting families and children in the area.

In addition to the mobile drive, several other back-to-school activities are planned across Savannah:

  • Woodlawn Baptist Church will host a Back-to-School Bash on July 26 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., featuring food, games, and free supply giveaways.
  • Bull Street Baptist Church will hold its 5th Annual Back 2 School Fest on July 26 from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m., including musical performances, complimentary food, and school supply distributions.
  • Chatham Subaru is organizing a Back-to-School Drive on July 27 from noon to 4 p.m., providing over 1,000 filled book bags along with additional activities such as haircuts and a magic show.
  • First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church will host a Gospel on the Greens Back to School Block Party on July 27 at 6 p.m., offering 1,000 book bags and various activities.
  • Savannah Police Department is planning a Back-to-School Bash on August 2 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., featuring free food, entertainment, and school supply giveaways.
  • The Uncut Barber Academy will provide free haircuts on August 2 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Hair by Nicole is organizing a Back to School Expo on August 3 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., distributing school supplies.
  • Curtis V. Cooper Health Care Inc. is hosting a Back-to-School Bash on August 9 from 8 a.m. – noon, providing supplies and health checkups.

Furthermore, donations for school supplies are being accepted by the Savannah Police Department until July 27. Supplies can be dropped off at any SPD precinct to support families in need.

With the start of the school year on the horizon, these initiatives reflect the community’s commitment to providing essential resources for all students and their families, ensuring that everyone has the tools they need to succeed.
