To cater to the diverse needs of the community, translation services will also be provided. The district is committed to ensuring a smooth transition into the new school year for all students.

Savannah — The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) is preparing for the upcoming school year, which begins on August 4, 2025. To facilitate this transition for families, the district will host two in-person registration events in July, aimed at providing support and resources for students and their guardians.

Registration Event Details

The first registration event is set for July 16 at Southwest Middle School, located at 6030 Ogeechee Road, Savannah. The second event will take place on July 24 at the Family and Student Services Center, found at 400 East Broad Street, Savannah. Both events will run from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and no advance appointments are required; walk-ins are welcome.

Returning Students and New Registrations

Families of returning students do not need to go through the entire registration process again; however, they must provide updated address information if they have relocated within Chatham County. Registration can also be completed online at the official SCCPSS website.

Services Offered

Last year’s registration event saw over 300 families in attendance, leading the district to expand its offerings this year to ensure better accessibility. The upcoming events will offer registration support, transportation assistance, and Detailed school nutrition information, including the announcement that free lunch will be provided for all students due to a federal grant for the 2025-2026 school year. Notably, no free or reduced lunch application forms will be necessary this year.

Language Assistance and In-Person Requirements

Recognizing the diverse needs of its community, translation services will be available at both registration events. More than half of the families who attended last year’s event required such services, pointing to language barriers and challenges with online registration as areas of concern. Additionally, families needing to complete kinship or residency affidavits must do so in person. Kinship affidavits are for caregivers who do not have formal custody arrangements, while residency affidavits assist families who lack proof of residence.

Support for Homeless Families

The school district adheres to the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, ensuring that families experiencing homelessness receive the necessary support during the registration process.

Required Documentation

Families attending the registration events should bring essential documentation, including current lease or rental agreements, mortgage statements, utility bills, and any government mail dated within the last 30 days. Additionally, a student’s Social Security card, a parent or guardian’s photo ID, and the student’s most recent report card must be presented. Immunization records and eye, ear, dental (EED) forms will also be necessary and can be obtained from healthcare providers.

Transportation Updates

Transportation services within SCCPSS are undergoing enhancements as part of new initiatives. The transportation department will now accept digital documents for registration, ensuring a smoother process for families. Furthermore, new microbuses will be introduced for student transportation, and adjustments will be made to the availability of free student passes for certain programs.

Customer Service Hours

To assist families further, extended customer service hours for transportation inquiries will be available from August 4 to August 14. After that, regular hours will resume. Bilingual assistance will also be provided for families needing help with transportation services.

Long-Range Facilities Plan

Significant relocations within the school district are being implemented as part of the Long-Range Facilities Plan. This includes moving multiple departments to the Georgia Tech Savannah Campus, with the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education approving a four-year rental agreement for the campus that totals $2.5 million.

Finding Transportation Information

Families can find information regarding transportation routes and schedules on the SCCPSS website, ensuring they are well-informed as they prepare for the upcoming school year.
