Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is celebrating National School Lunch Week with a new initiative that introduces students to international cuisines. The program, titled “Taste the World: Your School Lunch Passport,” aims to expose students to a multicultural palate and hopefully help them discover new favorite dishes.
At Isle of Hope K-8, students sampled a variety of Chinese dishes, including Hunan Orange Chicken, General Tso’s Chicken, chicken egg rolls, and fried rice. The program is supported by the district’s free lunch program that started this school year, leading to a significant increase in daily lunch participation, which rose from an average of 17-18,000 students to over 20,000—a 10.5% increase in just two months.
The initiative includes engaging elements where students can fill out a passport, noting their name, favorite food, and travel aspirations. This participation allows them to earn stamps and win prizes daily, such as triple chocolate chip cookies. Earlier in the week, students enjoyed flavors from Cuba, including Cuban sandwiches and dishes from Italy, featuring penne Alfredo with breadsticks. On Friday, the school menu will offer Caribbean-inspired cuisine, including jerk chicken and barbecue pork buns.
The program’s success is largely attributed to its engaging approach to introducing diverse flavors. The Menu Development and Marketing Promotions Manager for the School Nutrition Program emphasized that the objective is to showcase a wide variety of global tastes. The initiative is expected to leave a lasting impression on students, with plans for a special Thanksgiving meal to include families next month. The goal is to provide fun food experiences for students each month.
National School Lunch Week is a time to recognize the importance of healthy school meals. The “Taste the World” program aligns with this mission by offering exposure to international dishes, encouraging students to expand their culinary horizons while participating in healthy nutritional habits.
As this week unfolds, the “Taste the World” initiative not only introduces new flavors and dishes but also aims to foster a sense of global community and cultural appreciation among students in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools.
