Savannah

Savannah Youth City, Inc. is organizing a series of emergency preparedness events aimed at empowering local youth and community members throughout July. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to enhance disaster preparedness skills and community resilience, culminating from a comprehensive Teen CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training program that has been ongoing for five weeks.

This month’s events will showcase the skills acquired by participants during their training, which included essential instruction in fire suppression, first aid, search and rescue, and disaster triage. A live emergency simulation at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Training Facility allowed participants to apply their new skills in a realistic setting, reinforcing the practical aspects of their training.

Community Events and Fundraisers

To foster community involvement and raise funds for necessary emergency supplies, a Teen CERT Car Wash Fundraiser was held throughout June. The efforts of this fundraiser have led up to July 26, when additional funds will be directed toward the purchase of emergency outreach materials. This initiative also emphasizes teamwork, responsibility, and community service among participants.

On July 18, an Essential Swag Party will take place, where volunteers will assemble 2,500 bug-out kits containing critical emergency supplies and Hurricane Ready Books. These kits are intended for distribution to vulnerable neighborhoods across Chatham County in an effort to boost hurricane preparedness within the community.

Concert and IGNITE Tour

A two-night tribute concert, dubbed Soulful Awareness Weekend, is scheduled for July 19-20 at VFW Post 660. This event will feature impersonators of renowned music legends, including Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, and Aretha Franklin, aiming to further promote hurricane awareness and community readiness.

Following the concert, the IGNITE Tour will launch on July 21. This ten-day outreach initiative will extend CERT training and disaster preparedness education to various neighborhoods throughout Savannah. The focus will be on hands-on demonstrations and educational workshops, enhancing the community’s capacity to respond to emergencies effectively.
