During the assault, Kaikala managed to steal a pair of scissors from a nursing assistant and used them to threaten the nurse, dragging her toward an exit with the sharp instrument held against her neck. The nurse suffered injuries as a result of the attack and required medical intervention afterward. Kaikala ultimately pleaded guilty to felony charges of kidnapping and first-degree assault in Jasper County court on July 10, 2023.

Kaikala received a 12-year prison sentence for kidnapping, which will run concurrently with a separate 10-year sentence for the felony assault charge. This decision comes after Kaikala initially faced trial scheduled for August but instead opted to plead guilty to both charges before the court proceedings began.
