The pet food drive coincided with No-Kill Awareness Day, officially recognized on April 30 by both the Georgia House and Senate. As part of the observance, the Effingham County Animal Shelter waived pet adoption fees to encourage more families to adopt pets in need.
So far in 2024, the Effingham County Animal Shelter has reported the successful adoption of 13 cats, 24 dogs, and one rabbit, contributing to the ongoing effort to find homes for shelter animals. However, challenges remain as shelter director Lorna Shelton pointed out that not all adoptions account for the long-term responsibilities that come with pet ownership. Factors such as economic difficulties and impulsive decisions during the adoption process can lead to an increase in pet surrenders, which the shelter is keen to address.
The Effingham County Animal Shelter not only offers pet adoptions but also provides a pet food pantry to assist residents facing difficulties feeding their pets. This service has become essential as it helps to reduce the number of animals surrendered due to financial constraints. Moreover, there is a continued need for community involvement to support animal welfare initiatives.
The shelter has been proactive in its mission, with notable achievements including the spaying and neutering of over 3,200 cats since March 2018.
