Savannah, GA — The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) is gearing up for the start of the 2025-2026 school year, which will commence on August 4. In preparation, the school district has announced significant changes, including several shifts in principal assignments as well as planned back-to-school registration events aimed at supporting families.
Over the summer, SCCPSS experienced multiple principal changes, notably at Alfred E. Beach High School and John W. Hubert Middle School. At a school board meeting held on June 25, the board approved the reassignment of 16 personnel into assistant principal roles, contributing to a restructuring of school leadership. Brian Dotson, previously the principal at Hubert Middle School, has been reassigned to serve as assistant principal at New Hampstead High School. Notably, Hubert Middle School is one of three schools currently without a permanent principal.
To assist families in getting ready for the school year, SCCPSS will host registration events on July 16 at Southwest Middle School and on July 24 at the Family and Student Services Center, located at 400 East Broad Street in Savannah. Both events will run from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will provide crucial information regarding registration, transportation options, and school nutrition programs.
This year, as part of a federal grant initiative, all students will be eligible for free lunches, eliminating the requirement for families to submit free or reduced lunch applications. The school district is keen to assist those who may encounter difficulties with online registration, emphasizing the availability of walk-in registrations without prior appointments necessary.
In response to the success of last year’s registration event, which saw over 300 families in attendance, SCCPSS has expanded its outreach efforts to include two registration locations. Language services will also be available, with translators present at these events to assist families needing help with language barriers.
Returning students generally do not need to register again unless their residential address has changed, as this could impact school assignments. Families are encouraged to prepare the necessary documentation for registration, which may include proof of residency, student identification, and updated immunization records. For families without a stable residence, SCCPSS will provide support through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act.
In addition to these principal changes and registration events, there are ongoing renovations affecting several departments within the school district. Some SCCPSS offices will be relocating due to construction work at the 208 Bull St. Central Office building. Recent construction projects have successfully added new facilities, such as the Joseph Schwartzburt building, enhancing educational resources in the district.
As the new school year approaches, SCCPSS is focusing on ensuring that families have the necessary information and resources to support their children’s educational journeys. With leadership transitions set in place and dedicated teams ready to assist during registration, the district is committed to a successful start to the school year.
