Severe Thunderstorms to Impact Savannah Region

News Summary

The Savannah region is set to experience severe thunderstorms on Friday, bringing damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for isolated tornadoes. With an 80% chance of rain, local authorities urge residents to prepare for hazardous conditions. Recent storms have already resulted in significant rainfall, and a severe thunderstorm watch has been issued through the evening. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and stay informed about weather updates as the storms approach.

Savannah, GA – Severe thunderstorms are forecasted to sweep across the Savannah region early on Friday, July 11, 2025, potentially bringing damaging winds and heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service predicts a significant weather event that could impact local residents throughout the day.

The chance of rain stands at a notable 80%, and while the thunderstorms are expected to taper off, the weather will remain unsettled with a 40% chance of additional showers and storms throughout Friday. Rainfall accumulations from recent storms already exceeded a month’s worth of precipitation in parts of the Lowcountry, with recorded totals of 7-8 inches over the last two days. The Savannah-Hilton Head airport noted 2.31 inches of rain on Thursday alone.

On Friday, temperatures will be warm, with highs reaching the low to mid-90s and heat indices potentially climbing to near 105°F. Wind conditions will be light and variable early, but the storm system could bring wind gusts of more than 40 mph by the afternoon, with a possibility of even stronger gusts in some areas.

A slight risk of severe thunderstorms is forecasted, particularly in the afternoon to early evening. Earlier warnings were issued in Jasper County when a thunderstorm exhibited signs of rotation. However, no tornado was confirmed; only a wall cloud was reported near the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, assuaging immediate concerns.

Looking ahead, a severe thunderstorm watch has been put in place for Chatham, Bryan, and Effingham counties until 9 p.m. on Monday. Residents are cautioned to prepare for potentially hazardous weather conditions, which could include wind gusts of up to 70 mph, hail, and the risk of isolated tornadoes.

In light of the severe weather outlook, local authorities recommend that residents secure any loose items outside, close windows, and remain vigilant for updates.

Fortunately, the weather is expected to clear by midnight, ushering in a partly cloudy night. As the region braces for more extreme weather conditions, community members are urged to stay informed and exercise caution.

As storms impact the Savannah region, educational establishments are also back in focus as part of community updates. According to recent rankings by Stacker, various public middle schools within the Savannah metro area display a range of Niche grades. The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System has an enrollment of 512 students with an 11:1 student-to-teacher ratio, earning a Niche grade of B. Meanwhile, Effingham County Schools reported an enrollment of 1,063 students with a 13:1 ratio and a B+ grade. Additionally, the Beaufort County School District has an enrollment of 917 students, a 14:1 ratio, also receiving a B+ rating.

These educational highlights provide context as the community grapples with the harsh storm forecasts while preparing for the upcoming weekend, which is predicted to be hot and humid with more chances of afternoon thunderstorms.

Residents are reminded to stay prepared for potentially severe conditions and to remain aware of community alerts and safety announcements as the situation develops.
