Highlighting the accolades, Brayden Thomas was named the SIAC Starting Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the All-SIAC First Team as a starting pitcher. Reginald Tuggle, a standout shortstop, was recognized as the Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-SIAC Second Team, along with fellow teammates Tyler Tucker (first baseman), Johan Sandoval (designated hitter), and Adonis Perez (relief pitcher). Basketball Championship Victory

The Savannah State men’s basketball team clinched the SIAC tournament title following a thrilling 67-66 victory against Tuskegee at Morehouse College’s Forbes Arena. The Tigers entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed and displayed commendable performances throughout the competition. They commenced their journey with a win over Spring Hill College and then gained a significant upset against top-seeded Miles College (63-61). A hard-fought semifinal match ensued against Central State, where Savannah State triumphed 53-48 to advance to the championship.

Outstanding Player Performances

In the final game of the tournament, Javonte Landy, a junior guard, led the team with 23 points, including the decisive free throw scored with just two seconds left on the clock. Landy’s impressive shooting, particularly from 3-point range where he converted 4 of 6 attempts, earned him a spot on the All-Tournament team along with teammate Ayjay Pain, a senior guard. Qua King, a 6-foot-7 senior, was named Tournament MVP, contributing 19 points and securing 8 rebounds in the championship game.

Historical Achievement

This victory marks the sixth SIAC Tournament championship for Savannah State, following previous wins in 1970, 1979, 1980, 1981, and 2022. The triumph also improved the Tigers’ overall season record to 18-11, highlighting an eight-game winning streak. After a challenging start to the season with a 5-6 record, the team has seen a remarkable turnaround under the leadership of coach Clevan Thompson, who stepped in following the retirement of Horace Broadnax in January. Thompson ended the season with a record of 13-5, significantly elevating the team’s performance.

Upcoming NCAA Division II Tournament

With their recent triumph, Savannah State has secured a position in the NCAA Division II Men’s Tournament, where they will face the formidable Nova Southeastern University, the tournament’s No. 1 seed. The game is scheduled for Saturday, March 15, at 5 p.m. in Davie, Florida. Nova Southeastern, known for their high-scoring games, averages an impressive 105 points per game, relying heavily on key players MJ Iraldi (24.1 points per game) and Ryker Cisarek (18.3 points per game). This matchup poses a significant challenge for the Tigers as they strive to continue their winning momentum in the national arena.
