Savannah, Georgia

The Savannah State University Community Booster Club awarded the prestigious W. W. Law Scholarships to two exceptional student-athletes—Aaliyah Saunders and Khalil Grace—during the Savannah State Athletic Banquet held on April 27, 2025. Each of the scholarship recipients will receive $1,000 to support their academic endeavors for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Aaliyah Saunders, a junior from Winder, Georgia, is majoring in management and is a dedicated member of the university’s volleyball team. Her academic performance is exemplary, as she has consistently maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout the fall semester and is also a regular on the Dean’s List. In addition to her impressive academic achievements, Aaliyah has shown strong leadership skills and is actively involved in community service initiatives, including volunteering at an animal shelter and assisting at the campus library.

Khalil Grace, a sophomore from Atlanta, Georgia, is pursuing a degree in civil engineering with a GPA of 3.57. As a vital player on the men’s basketball team, Khalil has earned respect from both his peers and coaches for his positive attitude, dedication to personal improvement, and outstanding character. Both students were chosen for the scholarships based on recommendations from faculty administration and their coaches, highlighting their significant contributions to the university community.

Significance of Scholarships

The W. W. Law Scholarships are named in honor of Westley Wallace Law, the first individual to earn a Doctorate from Savannah State University. These scholarships aim to support student-athletes who excel both academically and in extracurricular activities while also positively impacting their communities.

Recent Scholarship Initiatives

This recognition is part of a broader commitment by Savannah State University to support its students financially. The university’s 26th Annual Scholarship Gala, which took place on April 5, 2025, at the Savannah Convention Center, raised over $327,000 for scholarship programs. The funds raised are crucial, as nearly 90% of SSU students rely on various forms of financial aid to pursue their education. New SSU President Dr. Jermaine Whirl underscored the significance of honoring alumni and investing in the future success of students during the gala event.

Honorees at the gala included distinguished alumni and community leaders from a variety of sectors, such as arts, education, and public service, highlighting the extensive network of support that SSU fosters for its current and future students.

Additional Scholarships Awarded

In addition to the W. W. Law Scholarships, other scholarships have been awarded recently to bright students in the community. The Kids Who Care Scholarship Program, organized by the Junior League of Savannah, honored Bowen Liu and Audrey Garlick during their Annual Meeting held on May 5, 2025. Bowen will be attending Stanford University, while Audrey will begin her studies at Georgia Tech.

Furthermore, the Abbie DeLoach Foundation celebrated the achievements of 27 scholarship recipients at a luncheon on April 17, 2025. This event honored the legacy of Abbie DeLoach, a former nursing student whose life was tragically cut short in a car accident. The luncheon featured a keynote address from Fernando Velasco, a player with the Atlanta Falcons, who spoke about the importance of investing in future leaders and honoring Abbie’s enduring legacy.

Overall, the ongoing scholarship efforts at Savannah State University reflect the institution’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and leadership among its student body, ensuring that deserving young individuals have the resources they need to succeed in their educational journeys.
