Traffic Disruptions in Savannah Due to Rail Failure

Traffic detour on President Street due to a train blockage

News Summary

Savannah experienced severe traffic disruptions Tuesday afternoon after a train blocked the President Street crossing due to a rail failure. The road was closed for at least one hour, leading to rerouted traffic and delays. Mayor Van Johnson indicated it would take at least an hour for assistance to arrive, while CSX/WATCO was called to address the issue. This is not the first such incident, prompting a collaborative study to improve train crossing wait times and reduce disruptions for residents and emergency vehicles.

Savannah experienced significant traffic disruptions on Tuesday afternoon due to a rail failure at the President Street crossing. A train blocked the road, causing delays and leading to the closure of the crossing for at least one hour as confirmed by a CEMA alert. The incident forced rerouting of traffic as authorities worked to address the situation.

Westbound vehicles were detoured to Truman Parkway South or directed back east towards Goebel and Pennsylvania avenues. Eastbound traffic originating from General McIntosh was redirected west to E. Broad Street. Additionally, vehicles that became stranded between Eastern Wharf and the rail crossing were turned around and also channeled westward towards E. Broad Street.

Initially, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson stated that assistance would take “at least an hour” to arrive and indicated that rectifying the situation would require an “undetermined amount of time.” However, by 4:24 p.m., the President Street crossing had reopened, and normal traffic flow was in the process of being restored.

CSX/WATCO, the rail company responsible for the operations, was requested to assess and address the rail failure issue. At the outset, the timeline for resolution remained unclear, leaving commuters and residents anxiously awaiting updates on the progress.

This rail failure incident is not the first disruption of its kind. A similar situation occurred the previous Thursday, when a blockage resulted in a 52-minute delay affecting traffic all the way back to Truman Parkway. This prompted expressions of frustration from city leaders regarding extended wait times at train crossings and the challenges these issues pose for both public safety and emergency vehicles.

In response to the ongoing concerns surrounding train crossing delays, a collaborative study is currently being conducted by the City of Savannah, Chatham County, and the Coastal Region Metropolitan Planning Organization. The objective of this study is to identify potential solutions to improve wait times at train crossings, balancing the needs of commerce with traffic safety.

WATCO has issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience the incident caused to the local community. The company reassured residents that such delays are rare and expressed their commitment to resolving the issues promptly.

As the situation with the President Street crossing stabilized, the focus now shifts to ensuring that similar disruptions can be mitigated in the future, safeguarding both the flow of traffic and the well-being of the community it serves.
