Savannah – Live Oak Public Libraries will host a series of six simultaneous Summer Reading Challenge kick-off block parties on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Families are invited to attend these free community events that promise fun activities, games, and the opportunity to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge, which runs from June 1 to July 31.

The block parties will take place at the following library locations:

  • Bull Street Library
  • Hinesville Library
  • Islands Library
  • Port City Library
  • Rincon Library
  • Southwest Chatham Library

Regardless of weather conditions, the events will occur as scheduled and are designed to provide a variety of family-friendly activities. Attendees will have the chance to participate in games and special events tailored to engage children and families alike.

Reading Challenge Enrollment and Benefits

At the kick-off parties, children and their families can register for the Summer Reading Challenge at no cost. Participants of all ages are encouraged to join in the reading festivities. Children will receive a gift bag, along with a journal to help them track their reading and activities, while supplies last. As part of the challenge, children can earn prizes for every two hours of reading completed, and reaching ten hours of reading guarantees a prize as well as an entry into a grand prize drawing.

Children enrolled in the public school system can take advantage of the Play Card program, which allows them to checkout library materials without incurring fines. Selected library branches will also partner with Second Harvest to provide lunches for children up to age 18.
