Savannah, Georgia – Asbury Memorial Theatre has successfully raised $23,000 through its March 2025 performances of the musical ‘The Story of My Life’, benefitting two charities focused on critical social needs. Half of the funds, amounting to $11,500, will support Hospice Savannah’s Story Keeper’s program, while the other half will be allocated to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The entirety of the proceeds from ticket sales was donated directly to the charities, thanks to a generous supporter who covered all production costs. This financial backing allowed all ticket sales to benefit the chosen charitable causes fully.

Hospice Savannah’s Story Keeping program is dedicated to preserving the life stories of patients who are nearing the end of their lives, assisting them in creating meaningful family legacies throughout Coastal Georgia. Jamey Espina, the Vice President of Development and Community Services at Hospice Savannah, highlighted the importance of storytelling in providing a legacy for families during difficult times.

On the other hand, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which was established by the beloved actor in 2000, is recognized as the world’s largest nonprofit organization funding research aimed at combating Parkinson’s disease. Stephanie Paddock, the organization’s Vice President, acknowledged the role of the Savannah community and the theatre in advancing the search for a cure and improving treatment methods for those affected by the disease.

‘The Story of My Life’, based on Brian Hill’s book and featuring music and lyrics by Neil Bartram, explores profound human themes through the lens of friendship. The production showcases local talent, starring Ray Ellis and Mark Rand, both of whom are living with Parkinson’s disease. The poignant narrative centers around a successful writer reflecting on the impact of his childhood best friend, exploring feelings of joy, regret, and love.

Kristen Kelso directed the touching performance, with musical direction by Keena Charbonneau. The show strives to delve into the nuances of friendship and the significance of storytelling while emphasizing the shared human experience that resonates with audiences.

Ellis, one of the lead performers, expressed pride in the fundraising efforts, underscoring the emotional weight of performing alongside Rand, which deepened the connection to the narrative’s themes. The production was presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International, enhancing its reach and impact.

This successful event demonstrates the power of community collaboration in addressing pressing health issues and supporting individuals during their most vulnerable moments. Through initiatives like the Story Keeping program and the work of The Michael J. Fox Foundation, numerous lives can be positively impacted.
