The Conklins' beautifully renovated home in Savannah's Marshwood neighborhood.
Regina and Brian Conklin, aided by architect Mark Turner, renovated a property in The Landings’ Marshwood neighborhood into their ideal vacation residence. Initially skeptical about the house’s potential, they embraced a comprehensive renovation to create a space blending coastal farmhouse and contemporary designs. Features include a whiskey room and a spacious kitchen, emphasizing functionality and aesthetic appeal while engaging with the local community.
Savannah, Georgia – Regina and Brian Conklin have transformed a house in The Landings’ Marshwood neighborhood into their ideal vacation residence, aided by the expertise of architect Mark Turner. Initially hesitant about the condition of the property, the couple was eventually convinced of its potential, leading to a comprehensive renovation that has rejuvenated the home.
The Conklins, who married in 2017 and each have two young adult children from previous marriages, sought a vacation home as their family dynamics shifted and retirement approached. They frequently split their time between Texas and Virginia and considered Savannah as a city where they could establish deeper roots. In the fall of 2020, they purchased a property in the Deer Creek section of The Landings but later discovered the vacant Marshwood house for sale.
On their first visit to the Marshwood property, the Conklins felt the amount of renovation needed was beyond their capability. However, Mark Turner, a close friend and architect, reassured them of the home’s potential and offered his services. Following this encouragement, the couple decided to proceed with the purchase, closing on the home in summer 2022, and began their ambitious renovation journey.
American Craftsman Renovations, a local contractor, was hired for the project, which turned out to be more akin to constructing a new home from scratch than a simple renovation. Most of the original structure was preserved, but significant interior rebuilds were required. Among the most notable structural changes were enlarging the home’s footprint, adding a first-floor primary suite, and expanding the second story. All electrical and plumbing systems were completely redone, with a new elevator installed in a different location than it was originally situated.
One of the standout features of the renovation is a whiskey room, designed to evoke the ambiance of a speakeasy, complete with a wet bar and bourbon display shelves. The room is styled around a Maker’s Mark barrel table, a nod to the couple’s love for whiskey. The home also boasts a cozy sitting room with a kitchenette and fireplace, which Regina prizes as the perfect spot for enjoying morning coffee while overlooking the marsh.
To ensure a clean and functional kitchen space, the Conklins insisted on the addition of a large walk-in pantry. The kitchen showcases an open-concept layout accentuated by distinctive elements such as a wood accent ceiling and a striking 1,000-pound matte marble backsplash. Throughout the home, steel accents are incorporated, including staircase railings and an outdoor fireplace, fostering a cohesive aesthetic throughout the interior and exterior.
The design blends coastal farmhouse and contemporary styles, creating a breezy feel that complements the surrounding natural scenery. The Conklins have found great joy in the views of local wildlife and boats, reinforcing their decision to establish a residence in Savannah.
In addition to enjoying their renovated home, the Conklins actively engage with the local community. They take part in various outdoor amenities, including golfing and pickleball, which further enhances their experience of Southern living. Brian noted that the completed home has surpassed their expectations, and the couple expresses contentment with their new life in Savannah.
