ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Milwaukee Brewers turned Tropicana Field into a road party Monday night, hammering the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 in Game 3 to grab a 3-0 grip on the World Series and put the franchise one victory from its first championship.
The game swung in the fifth inning. Leading 2-0, Milwaukee strung together seven consecutive hits with two outs, starting with a two-run single from Brice Turang, and finished the frame with eight runs. That ranks as the fourth-biggest inning in Fall Classic history.
Jackson Chourio had two of those hits on his way to a 4-for-5 night that included a double, giving him eight hits through three games. Turang and William Contreras added three hits apiece as the Brewers piled up 16 against Tampa Bay starter Freddy Peralta and five relievers.
On the mound, rookie left-hander Robert Gasser was nearly untouchable. He gave up a single to Yandy Diaz to open the bottom of the first, then retired 14 batters in a row. Helped by a caught stealing and a double play, he faced the minimum 18 hitters across six scoreless innings, something no World Series starter had done since Curt Schilling in 2001 and no lefty since Sandy Koufax in 1965.
The win was the eighth straight for Milwaukee this October, matching the record for one postseason. Game 4 is set for Tuesday night in St. Petersburg, where the Brewers can finish the sweep.
