SAVANNAH, Ga. — Families in Savannah weighing a magnet-style or career program for next school year will apply under new rules, as the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System revamps how its Choice Programs take students.
The district has dropped its Student Success Expo. In its place, each Choice Program school is hosting its own open house, a series that began Monday and continues through Dec. 1. The first stop was Savannah Early College High School at 400 Pennsylvania Ave.
Online applications open Nov. 16 and stay open until Friday, Jan. 8, close to two months for families to sort through options. The district runs its pre-K lottery during the same stretch, but that requires its own separate application.
One change came at the request of parents. A family can now take a seat in a program ranked lower on its list while holding a place on the wait list for a higher choice, in case a spot opens up later.
The menu of programs is broad. It includes International Baccalaureate, performing arts, engineering and aviation, plus hands-on tracks such as welding, construction, logistics, culinary arts, public safety, medical and allied health, auto collision and repair, and cosmetology covering hair, nails and barbering.
Savannah Early College gives a sense of what the programs offer. Students follow an honors track, and in their last two years they can pick up as much as a year and a half worth of credits through Savannah State University. The school has about 176 students, and 87 are expected to take part in dual enrollment, according to the district.
