Mobile Home Fire on Dean Forest Road Draws Big Pooler Response

Published October 18, 2026 at 6:24 am | By Dale Aquino, Staff Reporter

Firefighters in front of flames

POOLER, Ga. — Fire in Pooler tore through a single-family mobile home on Dean Forest Road, in its 1700 block, on Saturday night, but nobody was hurt, even though a man was inside the home when the blaze started.

Pooler firefighters and city police were sent to the scene at about 8:30 p.m. Fire Chief Wade Simmons said the flames started in the small kitchen area of the trailer and then worked their way into the walls and up through the roof.

The call drew an unusually large number of trucks. Simmons said that was because the stretch of Dean Forest Road has few fire hydrants, so crews had to bring extra water to the scene rather than tapping a nearby line. Traffic was steered away from the block while firefighters worked, and crews were able to put the fire out.

No cause beyond the starting point in the kitchen area had been released Saturday night, and officials had not said how badly the home was damaged or whether anyone would need help finding another place to stay.

Pooler is a separate city of its own in Chatham County, about 12 miles west of Savannah, and Dean Forest Road is one of the main north-south routes on the western side of the county. Residents along stretches without hydrants depend on tanker trucks and mutual help between departments when a house fire breaks out, which is why a single-home fire there can bring a crowd of equipment.

For neighbors, the takeaway is practical: anyone living on a rural stretch without hydrants should keep the address clearly marked and the driveway open so tankers and engines can get close quickly when every minute counts.
