Savannah Police Set Trick-or-Treat Hours, Halloween Events

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah Police Department wants families out trick-or-treating between 5 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, and officers plan to be in neighborhoods during those hours.

Police will also patrol busy streets and neighborhoods through Halloween night and the rest of the weekend.

Two free police-backed events are on the calendar. First up is a Trunk-or-Treat run by the Savannah Impact Program, set for 5 to 9 p.m. this Thursday, Oct. 29, at 2005 Waters Ave. There, local businesses, food vendors, artisans and community groups will pass out candy from decorated car trunks and share information about what they do.

Then on Halloween itself, officers welcome families to the Central Precinct on MLK Boulevard for Blue Light Fright Night, which runs 5:30 to 8 p.m. The event offers a haunted house walk-through and candy, plus ready-made treat bags for kids in strollers and wheelchairs.

For trick-or-treaters, police suggest sticking to familiar, well-lit streets and only stopping at homes with porch lights on. Children should go out with an adult and never step inside a home. Walk on sidewalks, carry a flashlight, and pick light-colored, flame-retardant costumes that do not block vision or cause trips. Reflective tape on costumes or candy bags helps drivers see kids.

Parents should check all candy and toss anything unwrapped or suspicious. Homeowners handing out treats should switch on porch lights, give out only factory-wrapped candy and keep pets secured.

Drivers are asked to slow down, put phones away and watch for children darting between parked cars. Police also remind everyone not to drink and drive.
