SAVANNAH, Ga. — Drivers who use Abercorn Street downtown will need another way through the heart of Savannah for more than a week, as the city sets up for the yearly film festival run by the Savannah College of Art and Design.
The biggest change starts Saturday morning. At 7 a.m. Oct. 24, Abercorn Street goes off limits between Broughton Street and Congress Street, and it stays that way until 7 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. That block sits right in the middle of the busy downtown grid, so detours onto nearby streets are likely during the festival.
One smaller closure is already in place. East Broughton Lane has been shut between Abercorn Street and Lincoln Street since 6 a.m. Oct. 19 and is set to reopen just before midnight on Oct. 23.
Teardown brings a second wave. Starting at 7 a.m. Nov. 1, the northbound side of Abercorn Street closes from East Congress Lane to Congress Street, and East Broughton Lane closes again between Abercorn and Lincoln. Both of those closures last until 11:55 p.m. Nov. 3.
Parking is the other thing to watch. Temporary no-parking areas will be marked ahead of time, and notices will go up on the affected blocks this week. Any car still sitting in a restricted spot after the posted time can be towed, and the owner pays for it.
Police are urging drivers to map out their route in advance and to be patient and careful downtown while the festival is underway. The City of Savannah also keeps an updated list of road closures for upcoming events on its website for anyone planning trips downtown. One report lists the festival as Oct. 23 to 31, while another gives Oct. 24 to 31.
