POOLER, Ga. — Mitsubishi Power Americas will put $490 million into a major expansion of its Savannah Machinery Works plant near Pooler, a project state leaders say will bring more than 220 new jobs to Chatham County.
The plant on Pine Meadow Drive builds gas turbines, and the project tacks on 450,000 square feet of production floor, roughly doubling the current operation. The company said it will hire technicians, heavy machinery workers and staff for plant operations and production.
Gov. Brian Kemp announced the investment, and the Savannah Economic Development Authority called it the largest investment Mitsubishi Power Americas has made to date. SEDA president Trip Tollison said the project was highly competitive and that a groundbreaking ceremony will come later to start construction.
The Pooler site opened in 2010 as the first full gas turbine production plant the company built outside Japan. Its parent, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, is based in Tokyo, while the Americas arm is headquartered in Lake Mary, Fla.
Mitsubishi Power said it is growing to keep up with climbing demand for electricity and power equipment, including demand tied to data centers and AI. The new space is expected to open in early 2029; no detailed construction schedule has been released.
State economic development staff worked the deal with SEDA, the utility Georgia Power and the Georgia Quick Start training program. State economic development commissioner Pat Wilson pointed to the region’s ports, rail lines, highways and airports as reasons the company keeps investing in Georgia. The plant is a short drive from both the Garden City Terminal and the Savannah airport.
