SAVANNAH, Ga. — Republican Jim Kingston held a lead of just under 3 percentage points over Democrat Amanda Hollowell in the race for the Savannah-based 1st Congressional District in Georgia early Wednesday, and Hollowell said she plans to challenge the outcome.

With roughly 99 percent of the vote counted at midnight, Kingston was ahead by 2.855 points in the coastal district, which runs from Chatham County, home to Savannah, south to Charlton County.

Hollowell’s campaign said the gap may be small enough to fall inside the range that allows a candidate to contest the results. Her team said it would give an update Wednesday on its plans to appeal.

A Kingston win would keep the seat Republican, as it has been since 1993. The district also carries family history for him. His father, Jack Kingston, represented the 1st District in Congress from 1993 to 2015.

Kingston, who grew up in Southeast Georgia and calls himself a committed Trump conservative, ran on tax cuts and economic relief. He pitched support for service members and military families, port workers and farmers, the groups he described as the backbone of the regional economy.

Hollowell, who said she has spent almost 20 years talking with voters, said the campaign taught her that people in the district want to be heard after a long stretch of feeling ignored. She said she would keep pushing for access to higher education, easier access to voting and lower living costs across the district.

Results remain unofficial until counties certify them.
