Mayor Presses SPD After 437 Police Vehicle Crashes in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah Mayor Van Johnson told reporters Tuesday that city police cars and other department vehicles have been tied to 437 wrecks since the start of 2024, and that supervisors judged officers responsible in 228 of those cases.

Speaking at his weekly briefing, Johnson said those figures fall short of what the public should expect. City Hall and Savannah Police Department leaders have drafted a response that mixes fresh training, tighter oversight, new vehicle tech and earlier coaching when drivers show risky patterns.

The annual splits he released show 165 department-involved wrecks in 2024, with fault findings in 91 cases, a little over half. The next year logged 170 wrecks and 84 at-fault rulings, just under half. Through the portion of 2026 already counted, the tally stands at 102 wrecks and 53 at-fault findings, again about half.

Across the full span, investigators cleared officers in 209 crashes, close to 48 percent. Johnson noted that at-fault cases eased from 2024 to 2025 even while the raw crash count edged up, and he said this year’s running total is still below either of the prior full years.

After the newest wreck, commanders ordered refresher courses and shift briefings on how to enter intersections carefully and keep due regard even when lights and sirens are on. The package also adds Geotab monitors on fleet cars, a monthly crash board run by precinct commanders, simulator drills, defensive-driving classes and extra coaching for officers tied to preventable or repeat wrecks.
