SAVANNAH, Ga. — Another motorist slammed into parked patrol cars Thursday night while Savannah Police Department officers were already dealing with a stop on Interstate 516, the department said.
The stop was under way on the I-516 segment by Veterans Parkway and DeRenne when the second vehicle struck the cruisers, according to the Savannah Police Department.
Emergency medical crews took one officer and the person who had been detained to a hospital. Officials said both had injuries that were not life-threatening.
Chatham County Police Department cars joined the response as investigators photographed the damaged patrol units and documented the blocked lanes.
Scene video and on-site reporting confirmed Savannah Police Department markings on damaged patrol cars, and county units helped manage traffic around the scene Thursday night.
Several lanes stayed shut near Veterans Parkway and Lynes Parkway toward DeRenne Avenue while emergency personnel finished their work and towed damaged vehicles.
By about 5 a.m. Friday, traffic was moving again on that section of I-516. Drivers still facing delays in the corridor were told to pick other routes when they could.
No name for the striking driver was released in the early briefings. Investigators continued to piece together how the second vehicle entered the stop zone and what charges may follow.
Interstate 516 is a key connector between midtown Savannah and the Truman Parkway area, so even a short closure often backs up Veterans Parkway and nearby surface streets.
