POOLER, Ga. — One person died after a head-on collision on the east side of Pooler on Friday night, one of two weekend wrecks in which Pooler Fire-Rescue crews had to work to free people from damaged vehicles.
The fatal crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on U.S. 80 East where it meets Triplett Park Drive, a stretch that carries steady traffic between Pooler and Savannah. Two vehicles collided head-on, and firefighters found one occupant in cardiac arrest. Crews pulled that person out of the wreck and tried to revive them, but the patient did not survive, the department said.
The second call came Saturday afternoon where Outlet Parkway crosses Tanger Outlets Boulevard, a busy shopping corridor just off Interstate 95. A vehicle had tipped onto its side. Firefighters braced it so it would not move, then took out the windshield so the driver could get out. That person was hurt but survived, according to the department.
Both calls were handled by the department’s C-Shift. The name of the person killed Friday has not been released, and the cause of the head-on crash had not been made public.
Firefighters in Pooler, one of the fastest-growing cities in Chatham County, respond to a steady run of wrecks on U.S. 80 and the roads that feed the outlet mall and the airport area. Entrapment calls, where crews have to cut, pry or remove glass to reach people inside, are among the most demanding of those runs because every minute counts.
Friday’s crash marked the more serious of the two calls. Officials did not say how many people were in the two vehicles or whether anyone else was taken to a hospital. Saturday’s rollover involved a single vehicle, and the department did not report anyone else hurt.
In a message to residents, the department offered sympathy to the families involved and urged drivers to slow down and watch for children in the days leading up to Halloween.
