Location

Isle of Hope occupies a narrow peninsula roughly eight miles southeast of downtown Savannah, bounded by the Skidaway Narrows tidal river. Bluff Drive runs the length of the community along the waterfront, lined with moss-draped live oaks. Wormsloe Historic Site, the tabby ruins of colonist Noble Jones's 1745 estate, sits at the peninsula's entrance along a mile-and-a-half avenue of oaks.

Character

Isle of Hope's character centers on its waterfront bluff and marina, with historic raised cottages dating to the mid-1800s alongside newer waterfront construction. The community has long served as a retreat from Savannah's urban core, with a boating and fishing culture tied to the tidal marsh and the Isle of Hope Marina.

History

Isle of Hope developed in the 1840s as a resort retreat for wealthy Savannahians seeking relief from summer heat and yellow fever outbreaks in the city, accessible initially by steamboat and later by streetcar. The adjacent Wormsloe estate, established by Georgia colonist Noble Jones in the 1730s-40s, remains one of coastal Georgia's most significant colonial sites.
