Location
The Southside extends along Abercorn Street (US-17) from DeRenne Avenue south to the city limits near Georgia Southern's Armstrong Campus at 11935 Abercorn Street, encompassing the Georgetown and Windsor Forest subdivisions. Oglethorpe Mall sits at the DeRenne/Abercorn intersection, while Savannah Mall anchors the corridor further south near I-95. Interstate access is available at I-95 Exit 94 (Abercorn Street) roughly fifteen minutes from the urban core.

The Southside is Savannah's most car-dependent, suburban-format district — subdivisions of ranch and split-level homes from the 1970s-1990s alongside newer townhome developments, connected by Abercorn Street's continuous strip of shopping centers, restaurants, and big-box retail. Lake Mayer Park provides a 75-acre recreational anchor with a walking trail, splash pad, and boat rentals.
History
The Southside developed rapidly from the 1960s through the 1980s as Savannah's population moved outward from the historic core, following the same pattern common to Sun Belt cities of the era. Armstrong State College (now Georgia Southern's Armstrong Campus) relocated to its current 250-acre Abercorn Street site in 1966 after a land donation, anchoring the area's institutional growth.
